History

The Shrine which is dedicated to the miraculous "Wonder Worker" and Saint of our times, Saint Nectarios, who fell asleep in 1920 and was recognized as a Saint of the Church in 1960 by the late Partriarch Athenagoras I and the HOLY SYNOD. Saint Nectarios, through his intercessions, has performed thousandss of miracles both in America and throughout the world, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Beyond his miraculous powers, Saint Nectarios is an Icon of humility and spiritual determination," said  His Grace Metropolitan Anthony, spiritual leader of  the San Francisco Diocese of the Greek Orthodox Church. Metropolitan Anthony has accepted the Honorary Chairmanship of the Fund-raising effort - and cites, "because of the significance of Saint Nectarios as the Saint of our times and the fact that Relics of this wonderful Saint reside in our Diocese at the Covina Parish. This is the only such Shrine in our Country and will be a focus of the regional, national and international support."

The Shrine and Parish of Saint Nectarios is located in Covina, California between the San Gabriel Valley of Pasadena and the Inland Empire of San Bernardino. Its simple roots were established in 1974 as the need for a Parish between Pasadena and San Bernardino was apparent with many families moving further from the urban centers to the countryside. When the Parish selected Saint Nectarios to be their Patron Saint, founding Pastor, Father Spiro Pieratos had requested a relic from the Convent of Aegina for the consecration of the altar of the newly established Church. Much to Father Spiro's surprise when he went to receive the relic, the Abbess of the Holy Convent provided the Covina Parish with a rib of the Saint so that a Shrine could be established in the new land of America.

It was truly the grace of GOD and the intercession of Saint Nectarios that provided a relic of the "Saint of Our Times" for the growing Citadel of Orthodox Faith on the West Coast of America. The result of this act created the foundation of the Shrine of Saint Nectarios in Covina. The Parish responded and immediately rallied to build a modest interim Chapel, a Parish Hall, temporary classrooms and converted a house garage into office space. With the intentions of building a permanent Shrine and related facilities, the Parish initiated tentative planning and made national appeals for support and almost $500,000.00 had been raised.

Today under the leadership of His Grace Metropolitan Anthony, Honorary Chair of the development effort, Father Pantels, Pastor, Father Spiro Pieratos, Retired Pastor, as Honorary Advisor, and the inspired lay leadership of the Parish, an intensified fund-raising and design effort got underway with ground breaking for the new Shrine of Saint Nectarios on November 6, 1994.

Metropolitan Anthony in leading this program said, "Saint Nectarios" presence is with us, and with the grace of GOD, we will build the Shrine and House of Worship which reflects the humility, traditions and virtues of our faith."

We know that thousands of individuals have been touched by Saint Nectarios in many ways. The documented accounts of his miraculous intercessions throughout the world, establish the illumination and enlightenment of this great Saint who lived in our century. Our Shrine of Saint Nectarios, the only such center outside of Greece, has developed a thoughtful and beautiful plan for the future; a vision reflective of the spirit of Saint Nectarios.

We hope that you will share our vision for the Shrine of St. Nectarios and that you will also consider the possibility for your participation in our Shrine support program which is a multi-faceted approach. It is an approach rooted in our traditions of Church and Monastery building throughout our Greek Orthodox Faith.
